Ok good question.
The main advantages are that DDR3 has the ability to transfer data twice that of DDR2 so it has much higher bus rates. And that one chip can allow for more memory capacity, it's possible for a single module to be made with 16GB of RAM. Also DDR3 requires less voltage then previous DDR standards. It needs only 1.5v where as DDR2 needs 1.8v and DDR needs 2.5v.
Hope i answered your question :)
